If a sanctuary spot hadn’t opened up, euthanasia was the kindest option. It’s such a hard truth—too many horses are pushed past their limits because people can’t put their ambitions aside. We get so many requests for kissing spine horses. I wish we could say yes to all of them. Along with Jackson, we also have Lawson, another TB who was actually adopted out as a riding horse before his owner realized he just couldn’t be ridden without hurting him. I share their stories because I really want to challenge this old idea that all horses should be rideable. In reality, so many of them shouldn’t be—whether it’s physical issues like kissing spine or emotional ones. Jackson has definitely found a spot in my heart. After losing my heart horse last year, I think I was meant to have another high-maintenance boy around. He’s on meds daily to keep him comfortable and will be getting injections soon to help his back. With Derby season coming up, we always like to remind folks to think about the Jacksons of the world.
