Vermont’s lakes are for everyone, so come splash around and make new memories 💦 Welcome to episode 1 of Accessible Vermont! One of my most asked questions is how to enjoy Vermont as a family, especially outside. So this series will highlight fun adventures for all ages and abilities, without breaking the bank!  ☀️ Sand Bar State Park is a gem along Lake Champlain near Colchester. This huge park offers more than 2,000’ of sandy beach and tons of fun activities for all. Sand Bar is the most-visited day park in VT and it’s easy to see why! Sand Bar has cool history too. Its name comes from the natural sandbar between the Champlain Islands and Vermont mainland. Over tens of thousands of years, the Lamoille River washed sediment downstream and formed a sandbar where the river emptied into the deep lake. Now it’s a shallow beach! Come enjoy all this park offers: 🏝️ Sandy beach, playground, beach volleyball, horseshoe pit, concession stand, and rentals for kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.  ✨ Beach wheelchair so everyone can feel the sand between their toes! 🍔 Shaded and sunny picnic areas with grills. Some are on the beach and others are on paved paths for extra accessibility.  🏄‍♀️ Car-top boat launch from beach and full boat launch across the street (with free parking). Fishing is allowed outside of the swimming area and birding is always allowed. 💫 ADA parking, restrooms, and bathhouse with paths connecting main park areas. Drinking water is also available here! 🐶 Dogs aren’t allowed at this park, so plan accordingly. Pet rules are in place to protect fragile natural environments and Lake Champlain’s water quality.  🏖️ Sand Bar State Park is also right next to the causeway to the Champlain Islands. Take a slow drive over the bridge to see VT and upstate NY from new angles. Tune in next week for another episode of Accessible Vermont! There are endless ways to enjoy the Green Mountains without hiking.
