The goal has always been to keep women, especially Indigenous and racialized women, out of public life. The toll can be devastating. It’s not just our mental health and safety, it bleeds into our families, our children, the people who love us and have to watch us endure it. And still, too often, we’re left to save and protect our own selves while everyone else pretends it isn’t happening. Abuse should never be the price of participation in democracy. This is why so many women choose not to seek elected office. And why so many leave.
