If YOU flinch at slammed doors or raised voices… YOU’RE NOT dramatic, sweetie!! 💔 That’s a trauma reflex still coded in your spine. You don’t hate sounds.
You fear them. Your startle reflex is controlled by the reticular activating system… the oldest, reptilian part of your brain.
When trauma happens, that system stays on high alert. So every sudden sound floods your body with norepinephrine and adrenaline.
Because your body learned: noise = danger. You’re not broken.
You’re protecting your inner child… the one who never got a warning. ✨ Mini Practice for YOU ✨ - When a sudden noise startles you… - Place a hand over your heart - Take a slow breath and whisper: - 🕊️ “I am not in that house anymore. This noise is not danger.”” - Repeat until your breathing slows. - This helps reprogram your reticular activating system for calm.
 Your body isn’t overreacting.
It’s overprotecting.
And now, you’re teaching it that safety sounds different. ⚠️ Research shows trauma keeps the reticular activating system and amygdala hyper-primed (Rauch et al., 2006; Lanius, 2010). This leads to exaggerated startle responses and hypervigilance long after the threat is gone! ⚠️ You’re NOT sensitive.
You were just coded for survival.
Now you get to recode. 💻 Go heal, Sunshine! ☀️ xo Brittney 🫶🧠🧘‍♀️🪬🧬 📚 My Neuro Knowledge Library
