Pink Patina? Yes it can happen. Brass is made from alloys of copper and zinc. When the unlacquered brass is aggressively handled or is exposed to lots of chemicals it can wear away the top layer of zinc and expose a copper skin. You can remove this with polish and a little steel wool which will bring back more of the brass. Do not use aggressive chemicals on your unlacquered brass. Like nickel, you want to clean with mild dish soap. You can polish it back to shiny with a proper cream. Most unlacquered brass will age in a greenish bronze which is what most of us expect and like about it. IF you don’t like surprises or are more of a shiny new person-this finish is NOT for you. I talk all my clients through this process because unlacquered brass will age and patina no matter what you do or how you treat it. Coastal friends- unlacquered brass will age differently for you than my city friends. Humidity will also age it quicker so if it’s in a bathroom with a shower-it will turn faster. Again- you can polish it up but that’s more of a once a year thing for me…you select unlacquered brass BECAUSE you like the age and the patina. Lastly, remember -it will age more quickly in the places you touch it most. I love it dearly but it is not for everyone.
