Headlines—especially in mainstream outlets—quickly interpreted his remarks as a blanket rejection of democracy. Some even suggested he intended to establish permanent military rule. This interpretation is sensationalist but highly misleading. It ignores the historical, and material context of Traoré’s statements, which is essential for understanding both his words and broader developments. When Traoré was asked about specifically whether a newly adopted revolutionary constitution might allow him to extend his term—the topic of democracy came up. His response: Burkina Faso was facing existential challenges, and the focus had to be on confronting these threats and rebuilding the state. It is within this context that his now widely quoted statement, “People must forget about democracy,” should be understood. He continued: “We must tell the truth. Democracy is not for us—not the kind of democracy these people are showing us. We have no interest in that.” When Traoré says “Democracy is not for us,” he is not speaking in a vacuum. His criticism is directed at a specific model: Western democracy, which has historically been exported to Africa through interventions, coercion, and conditional aid. “We have come to fundamentally change the way things work. But above all, to change mindsets so that people open their eyes, see the world, and so that we never fall into this trap again. The people are here. Democracy is slavery. There is no democracy in this world. They pretend it exists. They do whatever they want. And to establish it, they kill. A democracy that kills. We do not want democracy. May God protect us from this kind of democracy. We are focusing on our achievements, on our reconstruction, and on the revolution. That is the only path to development.” https://t.me/HRMQRD2024/3909
