Hello fam! I’m currently in Ghana, Africa, and today I finally worked up the courage to try dreadlocks for the first time in my life～ Honestly, I felt both excited and nervous. On one hand, I was looking forward to this unique, niche style; on the other, I kept overthinking—what if dreadlocks just don’t suit me? What if it turns into a total fashion disaster? 😂 Luckily, I had a local friend guiding me, and the whole experience was amazing from start to finish! I guess it’s pretty rare to see Chinese people getting dreadlocks here, because the moment I sat down, I became the center of attention. Everyone was curiously watching me—it was actually kind of cute. At first, only one stylist started working on my hair, but gradually more people gathered around and joined in. Suddenly, it turned into a lively little scene. I have to say, the braiding process felt like pure “torture.” My scalp was being pulled so tightly it was sore and painful—I had to grit my teeth the entire time! But surprisingly, once it was done, the pain disappeared. The only thing left was the heavy feeling on my head. When the breeze hit, my scalp felt fresh and breathable. It’s such a unique sensation—only people who’ve had dreadlocks or shaved their heads would understand. I thought trimming the loose hairs meant we were done, but then I experienced two shocking moments that completely caught me off guard! First, they used fire to burn off the stray hairs. When the flames were flickering right above my head, my heart was racing—I was honestly scared my hair might catch fire! Thankfully, it was over quickly. However, there was a small accident—the stylist accidentally burned their hand. Hair styling can actually be risky, so everyone should be careful! Even more intense—after the fire, they poured hot water over my hair! I had only seen this in short videos before, so experiencing it in real life was a bit overwhelming. Luckily, someone helped blow away the heat, otherwise my scalp would’ve really suffered. Getting dreadlocks is truly a marathon. I started at 1 PM and didn’t finish until 9 PM. They originally said it would take about six hours, but even with several people working on it, it still took a full nine hours. Maybe it’s because I have super thick hair, or maybe the stylists were just too into it and enjoying themselves too much, haha! Even though sitting that long was exhausting, the moment I saw the final result, the excitement made it all worth it. It was definitely a unique experience.
