Labelling Theory | Theory & Methods | 60 Second Sociology In this 60 Second Sociology, we look at labeling theory. Labeling theory comes under the broad banner of interactionist theories and is associated with the work of both Charles Cooley and Howard Becker. Labeling theory suggests that individuals will perceive themselves based upon their interactions with others. Individuals will make sense of their own self based upon the way in which people treat them, and this can be seen in Cooley's work, The Looking Glass Self. Individuals would interpret the way in which others interacted with them and attribute those personal characteristics to themselves. Other applications of labeling theory can be seen in crime and education. In crime, the labeling of an individual when they have committed a criminal act can lead to the development of a master status and lead to further criminal behavior. In education, negative labels can be internalized by pupils, and they form a self-fulfilling prophecy. #tutor2u #studytok #sociology
