If your baby is waking at 5am every morning, making bedtime earlier might actually make things worse. One of the most common things parents hear is…"They're waking early because they're overtired." But after working with hundreds of families, that's rarely the first thing I suspect. In many cases, early rising happens because your baby has simply had enough sleep overnight. Think about it...Most babies over six months sleep somewhere between 10 and 11 hours overnight (although every child is different). So if your baby falls asleep at 7pm and wakes at 5am, they've already slept for 10 hours. (Yes, even with wake ups for feeds). For many babies, that's a perfectly reasonable night's sleep. The challenge is that parents often try to "fix" the early wake by bringing bedtime even earlier. Unfortunately, that can create a cycle where your baby gets all the night sleep they need even sooner...and continues waking at 5am. Sometimes they'll fall back asleep after a feed, cuddle, or being brought into your bed, but that doesn't necessarily mean they needed more sleep. It may simply mean they were comfortable enough and sleep just happened. You might then notice the knock-on effects during the day: Short naps
Fighting naps
Not seeming tired at the usual times
An even earlier bedtime because the day has felt difficult And before you know it, you're stuck in the same pattern. If your baby's total sleep suggests they're genuinely ready for a change in schedule, a slightly later bedtime can sometimes help move things in the right direction. Give any change around a week before deciding whether it's working, as your baby's body needs time to adapt to a new rhythm. Of course, early waking isn't always caused by schedule alone. things like hunger, light, temperature, illness, developmental changes, or sleep associations can all play a role too. But don't assume that "overtiredness" is automatically the answer. Sometimes the simplest explanation is that your baby's sleep schedule no longer matches their sleep needs. #overtired #earlywakes #earlywake #earlybedtime #sleepneeds
