Application too close: Lining inside the waterline or applying mascara right at the root lets particles mix with tears, clog glands, and destabilize your tear film Expired makeup: Old products harbor bacteria and fungi. Studies have found Staph and even Pseudomonas in old mascara. Glitter & loose powders: Tiny particles can scratch the surface of the eye or sit in the tear film. Contact lenses: Lenses trap makeup debris against the eye, making irritation worse. My reaction was likely from my liquid eyeliner which I had used once before without problem. I tried every step of my eye makeup routine separately over the course of a few days and then analyzed the ingredients. The likely culprit was the sodium laurel sulfate (SLS) which is a known irritant and was in the eyeliner that I ended up tossing! And remember, just because it’s “natural” doesn’t mean it’s less irritating to your eyes. One of the worst reactions I ever had was to essentially oils in a blush cream.
