Video Title / CaptionIt’s interesting hearing Joseline Hernandez speak on growing up Hispanic with a darker complexion because while she identifies as Black Hispanic, a lot of people with similar backgrounds still don’t. And that mindset didn’t come out of nowhere. Back in the day, many of us were conditioned to believe that lighter skin meant beauty. Lighter eyes, straighter hair… those were praised. I remember it myself within families, the lighter children were often uplifted, while the darker ones were made to feel less than. That wasn’t love… that was conditioning rooted in colorism and generational trauma. And let’s be real , there’s been prejudice within Hispanic culture itself. That’s a conversation people don’t always want to have, but it’s real. But today, I see things differently. As a mother to two sons and a grandson who are Black and Hispanic, I’ve made it my mission to raise them to love every part of who they are. To stand tall in their skin. To understand that being Black and Hispanic is not something to question, it’s something to embrace with pride. Because at the end of the day, it all comes down to what we’re taught. Self love isn’t automatic… it’s learned. And when someone denies a part of who they are, it doesn’t always come from hate it often comes from a lack of love, years of being told, directly or indirectly, that they weren’t “the standard.” But here’s the truth… Dark skin is beautiful. Light skin is beautiful. Brown, caramel, chocolate every shade carries its own power. And “good hair”? That’s not about texture. Good hair is healthy hair. Period. We have to stop letting society define beauty for us and start redefining it for ourselves and more importantly, for the next generation. Because our children are watching. They’re learning what to love based on what we teach them to accept. And it’s sad that in 2026, we’re still having conversations about skin color… when we should be celebrating people for who they are, not just what they look like. But until that changes, we keep speaking on it. We keep educating. We keep pouring love where there was once confusion. Because knowing who you are and loving it is the real glow.
