You’re wearing a sweatshirt in 80-degree weather.” __________________ Holmes pushed back, asking, “So, you’re trying to say I look suspicious walking out of my own apartment? Why, because I’m Black and it’s 80-degree weather?” __________________ As the encounter continued, officers ordered Holmes to step out of his vehicle. Holmes refused and requested to speak with a supervisor. __________________ Minutes later, police informed Holmes that his vehicle inspection had expired. Officers then removed him from the vehicle and placed him under arrest. Holmes says he was later released and received summonses for obstruction and resisting arrest, along with a ticket for the expired inspection. __________________ Holmes believes race played a role in the stop. He told News 12, “When young white people wear hoods, they don’t get called suspicious, but as soon as a young Black man is wearing a hood, it’s suspicious.” __________________ Jackson Police Chief Mary Nelson says the incident remains under investigation: “We are aware of the facts of the incident involving the stop and the arrest of Jamaal Holmes and it is currently under investigation.
