He was born in 1137 in Tikrit, in present-day Iraq. Salahuddin became famous for his bravery, wisdom, justice, and strong faith. He united the Muslim world during a time of great division and led it with honor and dignity. Salahuddin began his career under the leadership of his uncle Shirkuh, serving the Zengid ruler Nur ad-Din. After proving his abilities in Egypt, Salahuddin was appointed vizier of the Fatimid Caliphate. Later, he abolished the Fatimid rule and restored Sunni leadership in Egypt.
Through patience and intelligence, he gradually united Egypt and Syria under one strong Muslim state. His most famous achievement was during the Crusades. At that time, Christian armies from Europe had captured Jerusalem and established Crusader states. Salahuddin prepared carefully and united Muslim forces. In 1187, he defeated the Crusaders at the Battle of Hattin. This decisive victory opened the way for him to recapture Jerusalem.
